The Wall Street Journal recently took notice of the flurry of activity in Kansas surrounding the state legislature and proposed income tax cuts. With an aggressive Senate bill waiting on Governor Sam Brownback to sign, the Governor has promised to sign the Senate bill unless more negotiations are made. The Senate bill would cut the top tax rate from 6.45% to 4.9%, possibly the largest proportional tax cut in Kansas history. Read more about how the Senate inadvertently sent this potentially historic bill to Gov.

Late last week, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin went to bat for the efforts to reform the state income tax. After Kansas put the pressure on by sending a tax cutting bill to the desk of Governor Brownback, Gov. Fallin said, “That’s been one of my big concerns in talking about reducing our income taxes, is that other states around the nation are becoming more competitive by reducing their income tax. We need to have a tax reduction this year. We need to simplify our tax code. I’m going to keep pushing up until the last minute.”

Now that a House-Senate conference committee has worked out the differences between the two bills, “The final bill is poised for a floor vote in both chambers.” Specific measures of this bill, like a drop in the tax rate from 3.5 to 3 percent for single workers earning less than $15,000 a year, are outlined here.

“This ruling disrespects Missouri’s balanced budget amendment and the General Assembly’s role with this measure. We had hoped that any opinion on the dispute over the growth future of Missouri would in fact be written by the Judge, not just the opposing trial attorney. We are reviewing the errors contained in the Judgment and will review all of our options, including appealing this decision to the appellate courts.”

The “Race to Zero” includes plenty of competitors. Kansas, Oklahoma, and – of course – Missouri are all seriously considering elimination of the individual income tax.

With each passing day, the conversation grows. Let Voters Decide President Travis H. Brown spoke about Missouri’s work to eliminate our state’s income tax, at the invitation of the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs.

Said Brown:

“The state of Texas remained first [in growth] since 1999, and this was among all senior executives that were responsible for relocating their business above a certain threshold and the top reason when asked why the state of Texas is number one was tax climate.”

Oklahoma’s state public radio station, KOSU, reported on the event that drew lawmakers from around the nation. Clearly, the personal income tax (or lack thereof) is a huge factor when businesses and families choose to relocate to a different state.

Residents of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma are becoming increasingly aware of what states like Texas and California have known for years: lower tax rates bring more growth. Growth brings jobs. And, in a still-recovering economy such as ours, the time for growth is now. Stay up-to-date on the progress of Let Voters Decide by bookmarking our site.
