Press Release: LET VOTERS DECIDE CAMPAIGN GAINS INCREASED MOMENTUM WITH MAJOR CONTRIBUTION

January 26, 2012 (Jefferson City, Mo.) – This morning, the Let Voters Decide coalition received a contribution of $1,224,000. The contribution, made by retired investor and philanthropist Rex Sinquefield, helps the campaign further its goal of phasing out Missouri’s individual income tax.

“Our coalition continues to gain momentum as we talk with voters all throughout the state,” said Travis H. Brown, president of Let Voters Decide. “We are thankful to have such strong support from Rex Sinquefield, who is a force for good in Missouri. Thanks to this generous support, we are putting forth a real jobs plan for Missouri voters to consider.”

The goal of the initiative is to gradually phase out the individual income tax and replace it with a broad-based, consumer-driven sales tax. Under the Missouri Taxpayer Relief Act, the state sales tax would increase by less than 3 percentage points. That expanded sales-tax base would provide Missouri with greater economic stability, which in turn would make the state a better place for small businesses and working families.

Similar efforts are under way across the border in Kansas, where Governor Sam Brownback supports a bold growth plan based on a restructuring of the tax system.

“There’s a big game coming up between the Kansas Jayhawks and the Mizzou Tigers, but basketball isn’t the only thing that should be competitive between our two states,” said Brown. “The hard-working people of Missouri shouldn’t have to see our state languish at the bottom of the heap in economic growth. Passage of the Missouri Taxpayer Relief Act would mean more jobs – and a brighter future – for our state.”
